Bowerbird Homes
Perpendicular Architecture were appointed as Architects in mid-2022 to design from RIBA Work Stage 0 (WS0), through to WS7 an affordable, Passivhaus Classic, manufactured housing solution using MMC Category 1 (Volumetric) and Closed Panel Timber as the primary structure. As Lead Designers, we have assisted the client, a national SME developer, from the start with growing the Design Team to ensure a successful project; avoiding mistakes made by other modular providers.
The journey with the client began with developing a Strategic Brief which worked backwards, clearly identifying performance criteria, manufacturing goals, transport logistics and supply chains. The Strategic Brief also created a clear strategy for each of the Five Capitals of Sustainability.
The project is now at RIBA WS5 and a pilot site near Birmingham called The Kitchens has recently received planning permission for 14-modular homes. Residents will have the option to pay no bills due to the high thermal performance and M&E provision - an exemplar in how we need to build homes for the future.
