A Colchester Mosaic

Our design competition entry for Clarion Housing Group, Latimer was led by Fletcher Priest Architects alongside Bradley Murphy Design, KLH Sustainability, HNNA Architects, and Studio Gil. The premise of our competition entry was to stitch together the rich tapastry of Colchester with a new thriving garden community.

We strongly believe that sustainable development must be connected to its physical and historic setting, and our theme pays homage to Colchester’s Roman heritage. It communicates our ambition for a garden community as a combination of many individual parts coming together to form one ensemble, with opportunities for collective creation, community engagement and growth over time.

A new garden community at the edge of a thriving city and bordering the countryside is perfectly situated to simultaneously respond to social, health and planetary challenges.’

Our involvement focused on bringing our extensive research gained through our Home of 2030 project alongside other commissions. We looked specifically at how we could deliver sustainable and manufactured homes using locally sourced materials and help to increase local employment opportunities.

‘A place that embraces innovation and diversity Our innovative ideas exploit scale and time. The mosaic can include a ‘field factory’ built on site, manufacturing, assembling and creating social value through economic value generation and employment. Repair and sharing centres at the community’s heart can provide shared amenities and tools, fostering a sense of ownership. Interventions in the landscape facilitate access to recreation, nature and education within distinctive places that are equitable and inclusive.’ - Perpendicular Architecture
