Thamesmead Waterfront
We participated in a design competition for Thamesmead Waterfront which was a proposal for Peabody and Lendlease. Our team was led by Adam Peavoy at Makower Architects and included a network of collaborators including Coffey Architects, Stephen Taylor Architects amongst many others. Our involvement focused around future plot testing and how we can deliver design-led housing incorporating modern methods of construction.
We named the proposal ‘Tidal Thamesmead’:
Tidal Thamesmead is a state of mind in tune with the daily ebbs and flows if the Thames Estuary. It will inspire a regenerative community refreshed each day by water, as welcoming to a diversity of wildlife as to people. The masterplan will be flexible and responsive to the ebbs and flows of economic conditions. It will build complexity over time from the bottom up as a successional urbanism, mirroring the diversity and stability of a healthy ecological system.
Smart Creeks will bring a new level of technical sophistication to ecological restoration, stormwater management, resilience to sea level rise, and energy generation. The Smart Creeks will be controlled by Tideflex gates, ensuring through flushing with each tide. Predictive metrological software will allow actuated gates to create stormwater storage capacity before a rain event or to hold water at high tide for electrical generation at low tide.
