Bristol Climate Smart Cities Challenge
Through our collaborative startup: The Positive Collective, we were shortlisted as finalists for the UN-Habitat Climate Smart Cities Challenge for the City of Bristol. Forming a wider team with Igloo Regeneration, Bristol Community Land Trust, We Can Make, Microgrid Foundary, Nodon, & Parametric, we are challenging the traditional procurement process and creating a new, value based strategy to help unlock small infill sites within the city. We are ensuring the community is at the heart of the decision making process, creating affordable homes which are resilient against the Climate Crisis, Biodiversity Loss, and the Social Inequalities we face today.
Co-creating a new open platform, Civic X Change (CXC), to deliver affordable carbon positive homes for the people of Bristol.
Connecting four dimensions of land stewardship, community value and decarbonised supply chains together with a 999 year longview fund that delivers financial returns and tangible social and climate impact.
Our system demonstrator will co-design, prototype and deploy a new model and supporting infrastructure for delivering carbon positive affordable homes. It focuses on small sites, aiming to deliver a significant proportion (20%+) of new homes as part of the City’s Project 1000 ambitions, and scale to larger sites once proven.
The engine of the system demonstrator is the Civic X Change (CXC) platform that brings together and match-makes supply chains of zero-carbon products, providers and materials; land; community assets and needs; and longview funding. Governed by a charter and set of value-led operating rules co-designed with the city, stakeholders and communities, it will deliver green affordable homes by:
Minimising current negative incentives and behaviours.
Avoiding financial ‘leakage’ typical of more linear conventional supply models where financial benefits to multiple suppliers in the process are prioritised over the benefits to city and community.
Engaging at a hyper-local scale to open up new opportunities to deliver additional and tangible community outcomes.
